Lonesome Blues

By Indi Riverflow | May 30, 2013

Kicking rocks off the loading docks
Counting this one off to hard knocks
Symbols of you sinking from sight
Slipping away in ripples of spite
My eyes are bone dry, but I won’t lie
This ocean here was a desert last night

It was love at first fantasy
We had matching plates of vanity
Flashy accents of eccentricity
And equal love for lunacy
You had tons of talent and all the right stats
But integrity, or loyalty
Or whatever you’d call that quality
No, you didn’t have a lick of that
Now I see, through the light under the door
That’s all I ought to have been looking for

{Chorus}
It must comfort the confused
Laughing as we lose
I hope they are amused
By my bitter lonesome blues

I have this way of seeing
People in the way I wanted to see
And you have this way of being
What people want you to be
So for a sober second’s rest
Around an aching heart
I agree, it probably is for the best
That we pursue our illusions apart

In every mansion that burns
There’s always something to learn
Sifting through ashes to track
The bonfire back to the spark
As I comb through my fears
I come back to the mirror
Shattered and hollow and empty and dark
