Slums Of Columbia
By Indi Riverflow | January 5, 2015
Hypnotized by the highway hum
I spotted a wild young bum
Stickin’ out his thumb
Unwashed and underfed
Holding a sign that read
“Will Work For Play”
It’s a pretty fair deal
When you put it that way
It takes one to know one
And we were running out of sun
So I said hop in, but you may as well know
My blood runs pure hobo
And I live life on the go
My elders rode the rails
Living large on songs and tall tales
Worked the system from the outside lookin’ in
‘Cause there was no work to be had within
{Chorus}
Bummed out in the slums of Columbia
Aimlessly chasing crumbs
Swimming in rivers of rum
A little wisdom’s always welcome
Well, I’ll tell you where you’re heading
If you’ll show me where you’re coming from
Oh, y’know ole Captain Kirk
He was in it for the perks
In his back alley office hard at work
Emptying bottles behind the Blue Note Bar
Gettin’ rid of the leftover liquor
And Stretch wrecked his leg, but not in the war
No, he got bit by an angry railroad car
And ole Lyin’ Charlie, with that razzle-dazzle charm
Never let truth stand in the way of a yarn
{Bridge}
We went round and round
And wound up back at the same old town
Life’s pretty simple when you strip it down
All you have for sale’s a smile
That just might turn someone’s day around
And that’s how you survive in style
Turn those tears into ragged rhymes
Reminding us that we all
Yeah, all of us feel that way sometimes
