Dimension Not Available

A birthday ode to Douglas Noel Adams, pioneer of comic sci-fi and the main reason I abandoned digital wristwatches at an early age. He didn’t believe in an afterlife, so I’ll save my RIP for someone who gives a toss. So long and thanks for all the laughs…

When touring the Galaxy remember these tips
Only the very strange seem to survive the trip
Never mind sudden shifts of gravity and reality
Be sure you’re well prepared for bad alien poetry

There are days you wake up to find out
Your world’s in the path of an interstellar route
You could wallow in doom and drown in despair
Or get out the Guide to see what remains out there

{Chorus}
Learning to fly
Is a trick as easy as pie
The secret’s simply this:
Fling yourself at the Earth and miss

Ship you’ve hitched seems the worst possible place
And then you’re tossed to the void of outer space
The irony-laden Universe is infinitely perverse
Just don’t panic, ’cause it can always get worse

And the President’s a Three-Faced Hustler
A shameless stud and spaceship rustler
Once you get used to the lay of the Milky Way
Just like home, the Galaxy’s governed by clichés

{Chorus}

You can let an awful lot of little things slide
If you are improbable enough to snag a ride
All you need is a towel and a golden heart
But it helps to read multidimensional charts

Comic justice is the only fair kind
In a Cosmos where we’re all flying blind
The answer is forty-two my friend
What did you say the question was again?
