Past the Last Chance
By Indi Riverflow | November 27, 2011
Dreams and waking don’t line up
Eyes to the side, stiff and on guard
Nursing an empty bottomless cup
Glancing up from mirror shards
Wondering how it got to be this hard
It is not the fault of circumstance
Nor of the faith you lent
When you took your chance on chance
Your fortune was already spent
Long before you went and sent
All your hollow chips out to dance
{Chorus}
I come from a long line of those
Lucky enough to survive
So I’d better wager my last five
Redemption will arrive
When you’re past the last chance
Better know the cards in advance
Some times you ante your liberty
Other times it’s your very blood
Don’t need no crystal ball to see you’ll be
Drowning when the gutters flood
Falling with a sickening thud
If you go to gamble with a heart of mud
{Chorus}
Worst hard-luck cases get locked into loss
The shift never ends the pay is inverse
The more you mourn it the more it costs
Whole game’s a catch and then it gets worse
When you confuse yourself for an empty purse
Heading back into the past and call it a curse
